Today, as many people around the so-called United States set out their BBQs, their beers and get ready to sit back and watch some fireworks (and in light on Canada Day a few days ago) I just want to take a brief moment to meditate on just what North American patriotism is, especially in light of the fact that it is not just the settler (White) population that engages in this spectacle, but colonized peoples living in these countries as well.
Basically my thought on it go like this: in the US, Canada and Quebec to be a patriot is to be a White nationalist. In other words, fidelity to these states – their symbols, their holidays, their songs etc – is White nationalism. This is not something that just afflicts White people though. As I said, many colonized people participate in these spectacles of imperialist White power, settler colonialism and parasitic capitalism. In fact, as I sat back to meditate on this last year during Canada Day (as I became trapped more or less in a Waterloo, Ontario park during the fireworks display), one thing I noticed was that many colonized peoples take to these days with as much, indeed at times even more, vigor than the settlers whose continental and world domination these days celebrate. It was, in the words of U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan, the “tipping point” in the Syria conflict: a savage massacre of over 90 people, predominantly women and children, for which the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad was immediately blamed by virtually the entirety of the Western media. Within days of the first reports of the Houla massacre, the U.S., France, Great Britain, Germany, and several other Western countries announced that they were expelling Syria’s ambassadors in protest.
But according to a new report in Germany’s leading daily, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), the Houla massacre was in fact committed by anti-Assad Sunni militants, and the bulk of the victims were member of the Alawi and Shia minorities Read the rest of this entry
Recently The Speed of Dreams decided to post an article that had first appeared on the personal website of Greg Renouf, a somewhat infamous former participant in the #Occupy Movement in Kanada. I made the decision to re-post Renouf’s article because I felt it was demonstrative of the paranoid fear that many North Americans have about the regrowth of the independent movements of colonized peoples on this occupied continent – in fact I had likened Renouf’s article to one I also recently re-posted from The Blaze about a meeting between the NBPP, NOI and the Iranian President in NYC).
As I had suspected it would, as Renouf is a follower of this site, it caught his attention. Now TSoD has had the honour of being targeted in his most recent article, Indigenous Racism And The June 21st Uprising… . Much to my own humour (as I no longer reside in Canada, or even on the North American continent, and as such also no longer have many links to activists there) Renouf seems to be set on drawing from this site and the comments made on it myself and others both that I am a “racist” as well as further “evidence” of the treasonous Indian uprising that he is so paranoid will happen in 17 days on Aboriginal Day.
