With the release of the new Stephen Spielberg biopic/war drama about 16th US President Abraham Lincoln there has been increased discussion around this heavily mythologised White national figure. In the approved Amerikan historical narrative we are told that Lincoln fought to end the chattel slavery of captured Afrikan people because it was a great inhuman injustice that was tearing a great country apart. This discourse though has the intended effect of obscuring Lincoln’s actual history, his reasons for leading the northern settler territories against the southern ones and his vision of a post-Chattel Slavery Amerika.
It is also unfortunate, but not surprising, that the overwhelming majority of so-called “Marxists” come to incorrect conclusions about the inter-settler Civil War in Occupied Turtle Island. North American Marxists believe that the inter-settler war was one between “progressive” Northern capitalists and backwards Southern slave owning feudalists. As such, the Union played a progressive role in defeating Confederate feudalism, spreading the capitalist franchise to the South and turning Afrikan slaves into chocolate coloured White workers , the proclaimed social base of revolution in Amerika. As a Native revolutionary driven web project The Speed of Dreams is encouraging all of its readers to join our calling out of Mohawk Nations News for their recent shocking and shameful display of anti-Afrikan racism in the article Obama, Buffalo Soldier Chief. To quote their own website, “Mohawk Nation News service began during the Mohawk/Oka crisis of 1990 by providing updates on the resistance.” From these roots MNN has grown into an internationally recognized source of critical news about not only the Mohawk people, but other Native nations as well.
However, that is not to say that MNN has been perfect. For some time while we here have been re-posting their articles, we have also been concerned with their promotion of globalist conspiracy theories which ultimately have their roots in the libertarian and neo-fascist wings of the North American far-right. However, while this has always been a concern, it has never been an insurmountable obstacle. That is why TSoD has been so shocked by the content of the article.
The article begins fine, as a criticism of the Buffalo Soldiers, Africans (mostly former slaves) who fought against Native peoples for the expanding United States settler empire in the period following the inter-settler civil war. This is a history we must be critical of, just as we must be critical of those Native nations who for this-or-that reason decided to side with the expanding settler empire. We must be critical of this history because we must be critical of all attempts by imperialist White power to set different oppressed nations against one another and be ever vigilant for any and all future attempts. As usual posting this piece should not be taken as an endorsement of all of Bruce Dixon’s positions. In particular he is a member of the Green Party USA, a social democratic organization engaging in electoralism in the US and the The Speed of Dreams certainly does not endorse this.
For more than four years now, we at Black Agenda Report have chronicled the self-silencing and growing irrelevance of black America and what calls itself “the left” in the age of Obama. Black America has arrayed itself as a veritable wall around the First Black President. But it’s not a wall that protects him from racists or Wall Street predators or Pentagon warmongers. The truth has always been that when we stifle our own tongues and circle the wagons trying to silence critics of the White House we only protect the president and his party from accountability to their supposed base: us.
Some African Americans and self-identified leftists relish their irrelevance so much they feel called to preach it. Early this week Carl Davidson and Bill Fletcher published a 5,900 word screed at Alternet.Org with the clumsy and contradictory title The 2012 Elections Have Little To Do With Obama’s Record … Which Is Why We Are Voting For Him.
